Vision Therapy
Vision therapy is a comprehensive and evidence-based set of procedures that goes beyond traditional eye exercises. It is a drug-free and effective approach to correcting and enhancing the skills needed for learning, reading, work, sports, and beyond. Vision therapy at Alderwood Vision Therapy and Development is a customized and individualized program of vision procedures that helps patients to:
What is Vision Therapy?
✔️ Develop or improve fundamental visual skills and abilities (tracking, teaming, focusing, peripheral awareness & more)
✔️ Improve visual comfort, ease, and efficiency
✔️ Improve the processing of visual information
What Conditions Does Vision Therapy Treat?
At Alderwood Vision Therapy and Development, we provide high quality, personalized one-on-one vision therapy for diagnoses and resulting visual symptoms including:

Amblyopia and Strabismus
Patients of any age with strabismus (eye turn), or amblyopia (“lazy” eye) who are seeking to improve visual performance (i.e. eye sight, eye coordination, depth perception, improved comfort with reading).

Decompensating visual skills or vision issues post-TBI
e.g. double vision, headaches, motion or light sensitivity, eye strain with computer use

Developmental vision delays and the impact on learning
Children who struggle with learning due to delays or disruption in visual development (including strabismus, amblyopia, eye tracking, teaming, or focusing disorders, or visual processing delays)

Visual Performance for Sports & Hobbies
All levels of athletes and ages who seek to optimize their visual skills to support their sport (i.e. visual discrimination, eye-hand coordination, depth perception, reaction speed).

Visual Perception & Visual Processing Speed
Patients of any age with reduced visual processing ability, whether developmental or acquired (i.e. concussion, or progressive neurological conditions)
1 out of 10 children has a vision problem significant enough to impact learning.
Most children with vision problems don’t know that they have one! Since they don’t know that the vision they are experiencing is abnormal, they aren’t able to express that they need help. Furthermore, many vision screenings and routine exams only check eyesight and don’t check for important functional vision skills like tracking, teaming, and focusing which must be developed and learned in childhood much like motor skills and speech.
Much like physical therapy or speech therapy, we can retrain these learned aspects of vision with vision therapy. If your child has been diagnosed with a reading or learning difficulty or is just not reaching their potential at school or on the sports field, a comprehensive developmental vision evaluation will determine if vision therapy can help them thrive in school and beyond.

How Does Vision Therapy Work?
Vision therapy activities typically have several levels. We may be working to improve multiple visual skills (like visual attention and eye teaming) at different levels in a given session.
-
Gain Awareness – Learn what the eyes and body are doing.
-
Improve Skill – Understand and execute using your eyes and vision in a more efficient manner.
-
Load Skill – Use new techniques under pressure including with additional visual, auditory, motor or cognitive processing demands.
-
Apply and Integrate – Apply this new way of using the eyes, brain, and body in real life in school, work, athletics, and life.
